Posts are metallic structures that goes 2/3 of the way inside the root of the tooth. This is so that the crown or bridge can be supported from inside the tooth.
The tooth is prepared to accommodate the post and so that the structure does not become a wedge and split the tooth.
In some cases, an impression of the inside of the tooth is taken and sent to the lab.
In most cases, the post will come back as a piece of metal that is perfectly fitted to the tooth. some times attached to the crown as one piece.
This is then cemented inside the tooth.
Then an impression is taken for the reconstruction that will be mounted on it.
In some cases where the tooth has most of its structure, a small screw and filling material may be placed to fill and build the tooth up. This is only in some circumstances.
